Overview

Zabbix is an open-source monitoring platform for networks, servers, applications, and cloud resources. Every feature is in the free product; there is no commercial edition with extra capabilities. Zabbix sells support contracts and a hosted Zabbix Cloud, but the software is the same.

The current stable releases are Zabbix 7.4 and Zabbix 7.0 LTS. Zabbix 8.0 LTS was at the release-candidate stage in October 2026 and is due in late 2026. Since version 7.0, Zabbix is licensed under AGPLv3; versions up to 6.4 were GPLv2.

Noteworthy features

  • Flexible data collection: SNMP polling and traps, IPMI, JMX, HTTP checks, and Zabbix agents.
  • Templates and low-level discovery: vendor templates automatically discover interfaces, sensors, and other components and apply the right items and triggers.
  • Distributed monitoring: Zabbix proxies collect data at remote sites and buffer it through WAN outages.
  • Trigger logic: dependencies, hysteresis, and expressions that cut alert noise when a core device goes down.
  • Trend prediction and anomaly detection: built-in functions forecast when a link or disk will hit capacity.
  • Deployment options: packages, containers, appliances, and cloud images.

Pricing

The software is free. Zabbix sells optional support contracts billed annually: Silver at €245 ($325) per month and Gold from €660 ($825) per month, with Platinum and higher tiers priced on request. The real cost is staff time to design templates, tune triggers, and maintain the server and database.

Pros

  • No license fees and no feature paywall
  • Scales to very large environments with proxies
  • Large community library of templates and integrations
  • Full control over data, deployment, and customization

Cons

  • Steep learning curve; expect weeks of tuning before alerts are trustworthy
  • No native NetFlow analysis or configuration backup; most teams add a flow collector and a tool such as Oxidized for config backups
  • Free software still costs money in staff time and infrastructure

User interface

Bottom line

Zabbix is the most capable free monitoring platform in our ranking. If you have engineers who can build and maintain it, it can match commercial tools on availability and performance monitoring. Pair it with a flow collector and a config backup tool to cover the gaps.

How we researched this

We have not run Zabbix in our lab, so this is not a hands-on review. It is based on Zabbix’s product pages, release notes, license and support pages, and user reviews, checked in October 2026. Prices change often, so confirm them with Zabbix before you buy.
