Overview
Checkmk monitors networks, servers, applications, clouds, and containers. If you read older comparisons, note that Checkmk has renamed its editions. The free “Raw” edition is now Community, the former Enterprise edition is now Pro, the former self-hosted Cloud edition is now Ultimate, and the former Managed Services edition is now Ultimate with Multi-Tenancy for MSPs. Cloud is now the name of the SaaS offering. The current major version is Checkmk 2.5.
Noteworthy features
- Automatic service discovery: identifies interfaces, sensors, and services on network devices and servers and starts monitoring them.
- Flexible deployment: runs on Linux, in a virtual appliance, or on a physical appliance.
- Distributed monitoring: multiple sites managed from a central instance.
- Large integration library: 2,000+ pre-built integrations and plugins in the self-hosted editions (about 1,000 in Cloud).
- Rule-based notifications: alerting by host, service, time period, and severity.
- Faster core in paid editions: the commercial editions use the Checkmk Micro Core, which handles configuration changes without a restart; Community uses the Nagios core.
Pricing
Community is free (GPLv2) with no host limit; Checkmk positions it for setups of about 100 hosts. The commercial editions are priced by service count, with Checkmk assuming about 30 services per host: Pro starts at €190 per month and Ultimate at €275 per month, both billed annually. Cloud starts at €240 per month, billed monthly on a yearly contract.
Pros
- Free entry point with a clear upgrade path to supported editions
- Automatic discovery and a large plugin library reduce setup time
- Scales to thousands of hosts in the paid editions
- Published, predictable pricing
Cons
- The interface feels dated next to cloud-hosted competitors
- The number of options and rules can be overwhelming
- Service-based pricing is harder to estimate than per-device pricing
- Edition names changed recently, so older guides and forum posts can be confusing
User interface

Bottom line
Checkmk is the easiest open-source monitor to get productive with, and the paid editions are reasonably priced. Teams that outgrow the Community edition can move up without migrating to a different product.
